Abstract

According to IBGE, more than 930 thousand people use wheelchairs in Brazil. Another factor to consider is the elderly Brazilian and global population; older people have difficulties for self-locomotion, as well. Brazilian cities are not friendly for wheelchair users. Therefore, the development of new types of wheelchairs with easy maneuverability and the ability to overcome obstacles is essential, such as stairs, irregular sidewalks and without curb ramps. In this project, wheelchair prototypes more maneuverable and able to overcome this type of obstacles will be design and constructed, but at the same time easy for controlling and safer. For this goal, knowledge of fields such as mobile robotics, automatic control, mechanical design, ergonomics, among others should be carefully combined. The project will be developed at the PAAC-UFABC group, in which several partial results were already reached.
