Resveratrol action on primary and secondary cartilages of the undernourished and refed Wistar rats

Abstract

Resveratrol is a polyphenol contained in grapes that has osteogenic action among many other beneficial effects on the body. It is known that malnutrition affects also the craniofacial growth. Therefore this study aims to evaluate the effects of resveratrol on primary and secondary cartilages of two major sites responsible for craniofacial growth, respectively, the basioccipital synchondrosis (SBO) and the mandibular condyle (PC). For both experimental groups will be formed of undernourished specimens in the pre-and postnatal (Group D) and normally nourished (Group N) with 21 and 60 days (Groups NN and DD), among which is the suplemetado with resveratrol (Group RRV), which will renourish it from day 21. Their cartilage SBO and PC will be obtained histological sections of 5 microns to be used for staining Picrosirius and Azo-carmine, by which collagen and cellular components are observed. The sections are also subjected to immunohistochemistry for the identification of growth factor similar to insulin, IGF-1 and its receptor, whereas in cartilage express the action of growth hormone. The qualitative results will be complemented by quantitative, involving the taking of parameters such as thickness of cartilage layers and number of reactive cells. For the final evaluation, the parameters are subjected to analysis of variance with one factor, followed by multiple comparisons by the method of Scott Knott. (AU)
