Abstract

Endophthalmitis is an unusual but serious intraocular infection which frequently leads to poor outcomes even with promptly clinical management. Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CNS) are the main pathogens causing endophthalmitis followed by viridans group Streptococci (VGS). Recently, previous reports have demonstrated an increasing incidence of VGS endophthalmitis which present more rapidly and with worse final visual outcomes compared to staphylococci endophthalmitis. Therefore, species identification of VGS and their correlation with clinical course and antimicrobial resistance it is important to the better understanding regarding to the pathogenesis and virulence as well as optimization of antimicrobial prophylaxis and therapy for VGS endophthalmitis. Routine identification of VGS species is difficult using biochemistry tests and also single-gene analysis. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of concatenated housekeeping genes has been proposed as the standard technique for molecular identification of VGS. The aim of this project is to determine the spectrum of alpha-hemolytic species isolates from endophthalmitis by using the MLSA approach. In addition, we are going to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility profile of the molecularly identified streptococci species against selected antimicrobial agents mainly used in ophthalmology (AU)
