Abstract

The labor process is one of the most painful causes, where the painful signals grows in an exponential escale, since the beginning of the active labor phase until the transition phase. As the contractions become more frequent and intense, the triad of fear, stress and the worsening pain and stress appears, which may compromise the maternal and fetal adaptation mechanisms and the labor evolution. Nonpharmacological measures to relieve the labor pain as the hot shower and the perineal exercise with a Swiss Ball is widely used in our area, but the psycho-physiological effects of these interventions remain unclear. Objective: Evaluate the use of the practice of nonphamacological interventions during the labor about the perception of pain, anxiety, clinical and neuroendocrine responses to stress. Method: There will be a pre-test and a post-test with measures repeated in 117 pregnant women to check the effects of using the hot shower and the perineal exercise with a Swiss Ball, separately or simultaneously, on the pain and maternal anxiety, labor changes and neuroendocrine stress responses. The correlation between the variables will be evaluated before and after the intervention, in which the mother, after randomization for allocation in one of the three groups, will use the measure for 30 minutes. There will be applied pain and anxiety scales, checked cervical dilation and fetal presentation, held cardiotocography baseline, measured vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, breath and saliva samples collected for measurement of salivary hormones, such as cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline.
