Abstract
Surface coating by the sol-gel methodology represents an alternative process that leads to new applications for common substrates. This is possible thank to the multifunctionality that the materials can acquire, which in turn will depend on the sol composition. The sol-gel methodology has been used for the preparation of films and coatings with different applications, such as energy conversion and storage, solar cells, batteries, fuel cells, conducting films, planar waveguides, and bioapplications, among others. These utilizations will depend on the thickness, composition, thermal treatment, and deposition methodology. In this work films will be prepared by the spin- and dip-coating technique, and the sol-gel methodology will be employed for the synthesis of the precursors at several composition, for different applications. The coating will consist of indium tin oxide as the conducting film, titanium as the waveguide, and calcium phosphate, for bioapplications. Additionally, the films will be doped with lanthanide ions, which will serve as structural probe for spectroscopic studies. The characterization will be performed by spectroscopic measurerements such as diffuse reflectance, ultraviolet absorption, Raman, infrared, and photoluminescence, as well as X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy.
