Abstract

During the proposed program (02/01/2013 to 02/04/2013), Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will be mainly associated with research projects, but will also participate in teaching activities and thesis committees. In regards to research, Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will be involved with 3 specific projects: 1) FAPESP 2012/15847-6 (Valid from 1/1/2013 to 31/12/2014) - Dr. Reinaldo Cooke's participation is vital for the development of this project due to several reasons, including elaboration, supervision, interpretation, and publication of results (due to his vast experience in the area of fatty acid supplementation to beef cattle), sampling of reproductive tissues from bovine females post-slaughter (due to his specific training in this methodology), laboratorial analyses (samples will be analyzed in Dr. Reinaldo Cooke's laboratory at the Oregon State University), as well as planning for future research efforts based on the results acquired from the current project; 2) FAPESP 2012/00884-3 (Valid from 01/04/2012 a 31/03/2013) - Dr. Reinaldo Cooke is associated with this project as technical support. His role will be in assisting on blood analysis that are still novel in Brazilian laboratories, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute-phase proteins (due to his experience with these assays), as well as assist in statistical analysis, interpretation, and publication of results (due to his experience with similar projects published in the USA by his research group); and 3) FAPESP 2010/16170-4 (Valid from 01/12/2010 a 30/11/2012) - Dr. Reinaldo Cooke is associated with this project as investigator. His role will be in assisting with blood analysis that he has vast experience (acute-phase proteins), as well as statistical analysis, interpretation, and publication of results (due to his international renown in this research subject). In regards to teaching activities, Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will teach 2 courses to the Animal Sciences Graduate Program at the FMVZ-UNESP-Botucatu during the latter part of the proposed program (Programming SAS® for the Analysis of Animal Sciences Research; Productive Management of Bovine Females; both having 25 vacancies, 2 credits, and offered from 18/3/2013 to 29/3/2013). Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will also participate in qualifying and final graduate exams at the FMVZ-UNESP-Botucatu, according to his availability based on the research calendar. This is an excellent opportunity to expose students, as well as their advisors, to the evaluation criteria adopted by graduate programs in US universities. Dr. Reinaldo Cooke is expected to participate in 3 committees: Doctorate Defense (Caroline de Lima Francisco - scholar from the FAPESP project 2010/16170-4, who is currently finishing a sandwich program with Dr. Reinaldo Cooke at the Oregon State University), M.Sc. Defense (student Augusto Aboin), and M.Sc. Qualifying Exam (student Tiago Leiva). (AU)
