Abstract

During the proposed program, (15/12/2014 to 16/2/2015), Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will be primarily associated with research projects focusing on reproductive performance of beef females, but will also participate in other research projects funded by FAPESP which he serves as "associated researcher". In regards to the main research projects, Dr. Reinaldo Cooke will be involved in 2 specific efforts: 1) Cattle temperament - impacts on reproductive and overall efficiency in cow-calf systems, and 2) Alternatives to alleviate stress in beef females exposed to temporary calf weaning. Dr. Cooke's participation is critical for the development of these efforts due to several reasons, including elaboration, supervision, interpretation, and publication of results (due to his vast experience in cattle temperament and stress management), sample collection and temperament assessment (due to his specific training in these methodologies), laboratorial analyses (samples will be analyzed in Dr. Reinaldo Cooke's laboratory at the Oregon State University), as well as planning for future research efforts based on the results acquired from the current projects. In regards to involvement in other research efforts funded by FAPESP, Dr. Reinaldo Cooke's participation is imperative due to: 1) Assist with blood analysis in which Dr. Reinaldo Cooke has substantial experience (plasma IGF-I), as well as assist in statistical analysis, interpretation, and publication of results (due to his experience with similar projects published in the USA by his research group), 2) FAPESP 2012/24816-7 - Assist with publication of results into the Journal of Dairy Science, and 3) Assist with publication of results into the Journal of Animal Science. It is important to mention that Dr. Reinaldo Cooke received a similar funding from FAPESP (2012/16856-9), which resulted in several research articles and abstracts, technology/information Exchange among OSU and academic institutions in São Paulo state, as well as teaching and outreach activities. Hence, we firmly believe that this proposal will have similar, if not greater benefits to all parts involved based on previous experiences, as well as the quality of information generated by the planned activities.
