Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the detection of vertical root fractures in conventional and digital radiographies obtained in three systems; in addition, it will be evaluate the influence of gutta-percha, metallic post and fiber-resin post and technique. 60 single-rooted teeth will be divided in two groups: control group and group with root fracture. The fractures will be done in INSTRON. The root will be used to obtain the images of eight groups: non-fractured; fractured; non-fractured with gutta-percha; fractured with gutta-percha; non-fractured with metallic post; fractured with metallic post; non-fractured with fiberglass post; fractured with fiberglass post. The roots will be covered uniformly with a layer of utility wax and placed in an alveolus of dried mandible. The periapical radiographies will be obtained with conventional film and digital systems: Digora optime, Vista Scan and Snapshot with an acrylic bloc used to simulate soft tissue. Three images of each tooth will be obtained: ortorradial, mesiorradial and distorradial. Conventional radiographs will be scanned. The images will be set on templates in two forms: only the ortorradial image or three images, which will be analyzed by three radiologists to evaluate the presence or absence of fracture. After thirty days, 40% of the sample will be revaluated. Inter and intraobserver agreements will be calculated by the kappa test. The diagnostic performance will be expressed in terms of area under the ROC curve. Moreover, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negative predictive value will be calculated. (AU)
