Systematic evaluation of individual clinical data of patients with aggressive or chronic periodontitis treated by scaling and root planing associated or not to systemic antimicrobials

Abstract

The use of systemic antibiotics (SA) has been shown to be a promising adjunctive therapy in the treatment of periodontal diseases, but the ideal conditions for its rational application in periodontics are not yet well established. Recently, new systematic methods developed for combining results from different therapeutic procedures have become possible to perform systematic reviews with a high statistical power. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the clinical effects of SA associated with scaling and root planing (SRP) in the treatment of aggressive or chronic periodontitis. Will be identified and included only randomized controlled trials with follow-up period of at least three months duration that compared SRP to SRP + SA in treating chronic or aggressive periodontitis. In the research strategy, the Cochrane Oral Health Group's Specialised Register, CENTRAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE electronic databases will be searched until August 2012. Manual search and evaluation of unpublished literature will also be held. The selection and evaluation of studies will be carried out in duplicate, and the authors of studies included will be contacted in order to provide individual data (raw data) of their studies. The criteria for selection and analysis of the results will follow the guidelines of the Cochrane Oral Health Group (Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 5.0.1). The results will be compiled into evidence tables, according to the type of periodontitis. Means of clinical variables will be pooled using network meta-analysis and the raw data of the studies will be combined in a meta-analysis of individual patient data. (AU)
