Abstract

Prof. John McCarthy is Head of the School of Life Sciences in the University of Warwick (UK). His institution offers a number of graduate students exchange programs and training courses in advanced techniques for the study of systems biology, protein interaction within large complexes, and bioinformatics.Prof. McCarthy has shown great interest in establishing collaborations between groups from his Institution and Brazilian groups working in the fields of molecular biology, molecular structural biology, systems biology and bioinformatics. His visit to Brazil may foster the interaction between these research groups. Prof. McCarthy was invited to give a conference at the annual meeting of the Brazilian Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Society (SBBq) in May 2013, and in his visit to University of São Paulo, he will present a seminar at the Institute of Chemistry (IQ). He will be able to visit laboratories in the IQ, as well as in the Institute of Biosciences (IB) and to discuss the possibilities for collaborations, students exchange and training programs. Prof. McCarthy also plans to visit FioCruz in Curitiba to further improve the possibilities of collaboration between Brazilian and British groups.My research group is starting to delineate a collaboration with the group of prof. McCarthy, which is going to be formalized through the submission of a research grant to the FAPESP-RCUK program. The visit of prof. McCarthy to Brazil next year may facilitate collaborations between other groups as well. (AU)
