Abstract

Mucuna Adans., genus included in the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae), subfamily Papilionoideae (Faboideae), has about 100 species with a pantropical distribution. For this genus, it is currently recognized two subgenera, Mucuna subg. Stizolobium (P. Browne) Bauer and the tipical one. Species of both subgenera occur in the new world, where ca. 18 species are distributed, and this number of species is underestimated, considering that new species have been described recently. These species are notable for their morphological diversity and different pollination syndromes. These fact show the possibility of the studies in the Americas contribute to the taxonomic understanding at generic level. Although taxonomic studies of Mucuna have been made in various regions of Old World, in New World the studies are scarce. The infrageneric phylogenetic relationships of Mucuna are still poorly known and its phylogenetic position within the Phaseoleae is inaccurate. In addition, Mucuna bennetti F. Muell. has a strict morphological relationship with Strongylodon macrobotrys A. Gray. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the phylogenetic relationships between the species of Mucuna, and other one of close related genera. This work aims to the taxonomic review of species of Mucuna for Americas and a phylogenetic analysis of the genus, in order to update and clarify the nomenclature and infrageneric relationships, as well as to enhance understanding on the position of Mucuna in the context of the tribe Phaseoleae.
