Abstract

The endocrine actions of vitamin D could be genomic or non genomic. From a series of in vitro studies, it was described an elegant mechanism linking adipose tissue and the bone that involves factors (osteocalcin and leptin) secreted by both cells types. It has been observed that the gain in bone content and density, typical of adolescence could be higher in obese adolescents. By other hand, others investigators observed a decrease when adjusted by height. Adipokines seems to have an important role in the bone metabolism during adolescence. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D with adipokines and osteocalcin in obese and normal weight adolescents. Methods: This is a cross sectional study with 400 adolescents between 15 to 19 years old. All of them will complete a socio demographic questionnaire and a 24h food recall. Anthropometric data and a bone densitometry will be obtained by DXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry). Blood collection will be taken after 12 h fasten and it will be measured by standardized techniques 25(OH)D, PTH, glicose, insulin, carboxilated and non-carboxilated ostecalcin, leptin, adiponectin, blood lipids and creatinine.
