Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent rheumatic disease, which can cause severe damage to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and possibly the functions of the stomatognathic system. The study aims to evaluate the masticatory function and impact on quality of life of elderly patients with RA with involvement of the TMJ. For this, 45 volunteers aged over 60 years, partially or totally edentulous will be divided into three groups: (1) with RA and TMJ injury, (2) with AR and without injury in the TMJ and (3) without RA (control). The salivary flow of individuals from both groups will be measured by testing estimulated saliva. Volunteers will be rehabilitated and evaluated for masticatory capacity (MC) (masticatory efficiency and performance), mandibular movement pattern (MMP) and maximum bite force (MBF). The MC will be evaluated by sieve fractionation method using an artificial test material based on silicone and the condensation rate is calculated as the percentage of crushed material below 2 mm. The MMP will be performed by tracing the trajectory of the mandible, using a kinesiograph. The MBF will be determined in isometric clenching for 7 seconds, in the molar region, bilaterally. The oral health impact and quality of life in elderly patients about their oral health status will be evaluated through the application of the OHIP-14. Data will be analyzed by statistical test. It is hoped that volunteers affected by RA and TMJ involvement have lower values of objective variables, as well as changes in oral health impact and quality of life. (AU)
