Abstract

The use of a single implant in the mandibular symphysis has been presented as a viable alternative in terms of implant longevity, patient satisfaction in favoring functional properties, related to the lack of retention and stability of conventional full mandibular prostheses. The aim of this longitudinal clinical study will be to evaluate maximal bite force (BF) and masticatory performance (MP), quality of life and self-perception of oral health in patients rehabilitated by mandibular overdenture retained by a single implant. to a total maxillary prosthesis within 3 years. The sample will consist of 30 total edentulous patients of both genders, users of mandibular overdenture over an osseointegrated implant. As control group, will be selected individuals using bimaxillary total dentures (n = 30) that meet the same pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The MP will be performed by chewing the almond natural food (30, 40 cycles and "ready to swallow") and measured by the sieve method, while the BF will be measured by a digital gnatodynamometer. To assess oral health self-perception and oral health impact profile on quality of life, the GOHAI ("Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index - GOHAI") and OHIP ("Edent Oral Health Impact Profile Edent") questionnaires, respectively, will be used. The previously evaluated outcomes were performed in the initial 30-day period after the installation and adaptation with O'ring fitting in the overdenture over the osseointegrated implant (T1). Subsequent evaluations to be carried out will be within 36 months (T2). If the normality and sphericity assumptions are met, comparisons of measurements over time will be performed using repeated measures ANOVA, with a significance level of 5%.
