Abstract

The present bid is based on a previous eight-year project, funded by two successive Thematic researches Programs FAPESP (processes numbers 99/09544-4 and 03/11860-9). Drawing on that research experience, what is intended hereby is not just an inquiry on critical theory's intellectual tradition and its questions, but rather an inquiry from critical theory's developments stance. The proposed crucial concept is that of autonomy, whose critical examination allows not only the articulation of the different domains of moral, politics and law in contemporary societies, but the testing of different critical proposals on empirical research as well. The project, in its general conception, is composed by the following steps: 1) the concept of autonomy's place in philosophical and sociological tradition; 2) the notion of autonomy's place in different social theories and in different current models of critical theory; 3) empirical inquiries in law, politics and moral spheres regarding a critical assessment of the concept of autonomy.
