Abstract

Terrestrial gastropods exude mucus by the body surface, when traveling, to protect its body from mechanical injury, desiccation or contact with harmful substances. Mucus of molluscs has been studied as a source of new natural compounds with diverse biological activities, as ability to induce cell proliferation. Human fibroblasts treated with 0.012 mg/µl of Phyllocaulis boraceiensis mucus have high rates of proliferation inducing a significant increase in production and secretion of extracellular matrix such as collagen fibres. Studies involving the mucus of P. boraceiensis can elucidate the presence of proteins that induces healing process in mice submitted a dorsal incision. The aim of this project is to identify, isolate, purify and sequence proteins present in the mucus of the land slug P. boraceiensis with antiviral action "in vitro". Applying proteomic techniques as two-dimensional gels, fragmentation by chromatography and mass spectrometry. The viral activity will be determined "in vitro" using VERO, L929 and MDCK cells infected with measles virus, poliovirus and Influenza virus. (AU)
