Abstract

There is scientific evidence showing that the injuries resulting from malnutrition, can be minimized when the disease is diagnosed early on, preventing the development of complications and death, especially in older people. To validate the method of nutritional screening for the elderly at population level, in São Paulo-SP, Brazil. Methods: The Nutritional Screening Initiative (NSI), a method of nutritional screening for the elderly, that was proposed and validated, in the United States (USA). This method was chosen for validation, in my research which uses the cross-cultural adaptation, it consists of five steps: conceptual equivalence and issues of semantics, operational and measurement. The sample is composed of elderly participants in the SABE Study-Health, Welfare and Aging, nutritionists and health community agents who are from basic health units, the city of São Paulo-SP, to be selected. After adaptation, the results of the NSI will be compared to the results of nutritional assessment conducted by an objective method, anthropometry, through the body mass index and muscle mass. The evaluation of the psychometric properties will be verified by analysis of internal and external consistency, reliability, and validity, using Cronbach Alpha coefficient, intraclass correlation and Pearson, sensitivity and specificity. The data will be entered into Epi-Info 2000, Stata version 10.0 and SPSS version 17.0 will be used for the calculations. (AU)
