Abstract

Cockroaches are insects considered urban pests, since they are capable of carrying pathogens to human habitations and may depreciate food, clothing and documents. Among the most important species in Brazil is Periplaneta americana, which is commonly found in high numbers in sewage networks galleries. Its control is accomplished primarily by the application of chemicals that can cause harm to human health and pollute the environment. Control strategies with lower environmental risk may be used, such as entomopathogenic fungi. However, one aspect to be considered is the geographical structure where insects live and may have population subdivisions. There is also interference on pathogenicity and virulence of different fungal species. Therefore, the aim of this project is to verify the genetic divergence of populations of P. americana from two cities of the state of São Paulo and assess the mortality of adults after treatment of cement tubes with dimensions of urban sewage with synthetic insecticides and entomopathogenic fungal species.
