Development of a reaction cell to promote in situ and operando studies of catalysts using X ray diffraction and absorption techniques at the LNLS

Abstract

The present project aims to develop a plug-flow capillary cell reactor to be applied in in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements in order to use high pressures (20-50 bar) and high temperatures (10000C). The reactor will allow the direct correlation of the results obtained by both techniques because the measurements will be done in the same experimental conditions. The catalytic properties, activity, selectivity and stability, would be evaluated during the structural and electronic characterization by using a micro gas chromatograph (micro-GC) installed in the outlet of the cell reactor. This will allow the execution of experiments in operando condition, which will permit the correlation of the complex interactions between structure and catalysis. The cell reactor will be developed and improved by a post-doc researcher of the DRX group and researchers of the XRD, XAS and XDS beamlines of the LNLS. After commissioning, the plug-flow capillary cell reactor will be available to be used by the LNLS´s users that are interested in the study of heterogeneous catalysts and other functional materials in controlled environmental conditions (in situ) or in association with the activity and selectivity (operando condition).
