Abstract
Introduction: One of the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world is coronary artery disease (CAD). Studies that investigate the pathophysiology of CAD are important to the prevention and treatment of this disease. The inflammation in epicardial adipose tissue (EAP) appears to be associated with CAD. However, the relation between the proximity of CAD and inflammation in EAP has not been elucidated in previous studies due to methodological limitations. Aim: To investigate the association between inflammation in EAP and coronary artery atherosclerosis in a clinicopathological study. Methods: This cross-sectional study will be performed at the Sao Paulo Autopsy Service. A sample of 78 cases will be collected. Coronary arteries (the main left coronary artery, circumflex, left anterior descending and right coronary) will be represented in the point of the highest obstruction. The samples will be divided in three groups: control, acute CAD, chronic CAD, according to obstruction degree and anatomopathologic classification of atherosclerosis. The sample of EAP near the coronary artery stenosis will be analyzed. Perirenal visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue will be considered an external control to epicardial inflammation. The inflammatory cells (macrophages, lymphocytes B and T) will be quantified using immunochemistry. The quantity of inflammatory cells will be compared between three groups. (AU)
