Monitoring of electrolyte and acid-base alterations in horses submitted to the 160 km endurance race

Abstract

The effort of endurance race is characterized by induction, in the athletes of the equine species, dehydration associated with considerable changes in electrolyte status and changes in acid-base homeostasis. The objective of this project will monitor changes in electrolyte and acid-base balance of the purebred Arabian horses, competing in a FEI*** 160 km. Sixteen horses, males and females, adults who participate in an endurance race horses, three star FEI (CEI3 *) 160 km away, will be monitored and divided into two groups, finalists (F) and eliminated (E). Venous blood samples will be collected before the start and during the race. Samples will also be obtained in the recovery period, immediately, two fifteen hours after the effort. To study the possible changes in acid-base homeostasis variables will be quantified venous blood gas and electrolyte as pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2), partial pressure of oxygen (PO2), base excess (BEecf), bicarbonate (HCO3-), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), oxygen saturation (sO2%), sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-) ionized calcium (Ca++) and strong ion different (SID). Other variables such as hematocrit, hemoglobin, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, inorganic phosphorus, blood lactate and glucose concentrations will also be determined. In order to compare the variables obtained in the competition within each assessment stage, will be held analysis of variance (ANOVA). For the statistical differences detected in the F test will be held the Tukey test. Also will be apply the t test for unpaired comparison of means (independent samples) groups of finalists and eliminated. (AU)
