Abstract

Epidemiological studies indicate an increase in the prevalence of dental erosion due to an increased longevity of the population and changes in dietary habits of the population, which has indiscriminately consuming acidic foods and drinks. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the efficacy of CO2 laser irradiation, associated or not to fluoride, on protecting eroded bovine dental enamel from future acids episodes. Sixteen volunteers will participate in this in situ study which five treatments will be tested: G1 - control (no treatment), G2 - topical fluoride application (Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride - APF), G3 - CO2 laser irradiation (10.6 ¼ m ) G4 - CO2 laser (10.6 ¼ m) + topical application of FFA and G5 - topical application of APF + CO2 laser. The samples will have their microhardness (n = 13) measured at the start of the trial period (baseline, t0) and after the erosive challenge in vitro (t1), which will be accomplished by immersing the samples in the citric acid solution 1% (pH 4.0) for 3 minutes, after the enamel surface treatments eroded in vitro (t2) and in situ after erosion (t3), which will be performed by immersing the device in the samples containing palatal citric acid (0.05M - pH 2.3) for 20 minutes, 2 times daily. The scanning electron microscopy (n = 3) will allow the observation of changes in surface morphology in 04 experimental times. The results will be evaluated according to the classical statistical concepts. (AU)
