Abstract

Renal transplantation is considered the best choice of treatment and rehabilitation for patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) in the terminal stage, providing better quality of life and prolonging life expectancy, compared to patients maintained on chronic dialysis. The project objective is to assess the associations between nutritional status and protein oxidative stress in patients post-kidney transplant early and late. Individuals will be analyzed at hospital output and three months after. To assess the nutritional status will be considered anthropometric data, such as weight, height, BMI, triceps skinfold, besides arm, waist, rip and abdominal circumference. Body composition will be analyzed by bioelectrical impedance. The estimated energy expenditure will be made by indirect calorimetry. Food consumption will be observed through 24-hour recall and food records. We will analyze biochemical, such as urea, creatinine, glucose, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, total cholesterol and fractions (LDL, HDL), triglycerides, blood count, transferrin, albumin, total protein and C-reactive protein. To evaluate the oxidative stress we will measure advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), beta-carotene, vitamins C and E. Results are expressed as mean and standard deviation, with significance level preset 5%. Non-parametric tests will be performed to compare means at different periods after renal transplantation and the associations between parameters will be evaluated by tests of correlation and multiple linear regression analysis.
