Abstract

The grazing management, combined with the techniques of supplementation can increase the efficiency of nutrient utilization and available resources in livestock systems, thereby reducing environmental impacts and increasing the financial profitability. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of production, environmental and economic aspects of rearing beef steers supplemented on pastures during the wet season and transition wet-dry and finishing strategies in the dry season. The project will be conducted in two years described as Year I and II. The first year will be divided into two phases, wet and transition season. Will be evaluated three sward heights, 15, 25 and 35 cm and different supplementation strategies, multiple supplements in the amount of 0.3% and 0.6% of BW (body weight) in pastures of 15 cm of heights and mineral mixture and multiple supplements in the amount of 0.3% / BW in the pastures of 25 and 35 cm. The design is completely randomized with six treatments and three repetitions (paddocks) with repeated measures in four periods of 28 days. During the dry season the animals will be finished on pasture or in the feedlot evaluating the history of management during the wet season. The second year will be divided into three phases. During the wet season will be studied the same heights (15, 25 and 35 cm) with the following supplementation strategies: multiple supplements in the amount of 0.3% and 0.6% of BW in pastures of 15 cm of heights, 0.1% and 0.3% of BW in the pastures of 25 cm and mineral mixture and 0.1% of BW in the pastures of 35cm. The design is completely randomized with six treatments and three repetitions (paddocks) with repeated measures in four periods of 28 days. In the transition wet-dry season the animals of the heights of 15 cm will be finished in a feedlot evaluating the history of management in the wet season. Animals on the pasture of 25 cm height will receive 0.3% and 0.6% of BW and the animals of the 35 cm height will receive 0.1% and 0.3% of BW. The design is completely randomized with four treatments and three repetitions (pickets) with repeated measures on three periods of 28 days. During the dry season the animals will be finished in pasture receiving 1.0% of BW of supplements, or in the feedlot. In both systems will be considering the history of management during the transition phase. (AU)
