Abstract

The modern gymnastics, or "gymnastics science" (SOARES, 1994), using the european methods of gymnastics in the Renaissance, was disseminated and promoted in different contexts such as schools, public parks, squares, military training centers, industries etc; forming new bodies, new values (SOARES, 1994, 1998). Much has been pursued through it, emphasizing hygiene habits, physical stamina, discipline, experience of struggle, overcoming physical, moral formation, among other things, forming new habits for a new social model (HOBSBAWN and RANGER , 1997). Many of these issues were also touched by the modern sport, linked to other aspects such as competitiveness and performance (EHRENBERG, 1991; ELIAS and DUNNING, 1992). From different theoretical frameworks is possible to consider that there are singularities between these practices, such as discipline, standardization and efficiency of the gesture, the relationship with new economic models and social issues. Factors that may have facilitated the introduction of the practice of sport gymnastics into the clubs, or not. Thus, this research aims to investigate how did this transition from scientific gymnastics practice for the sports gymnastics, in Sports Associations and Clubs in the city of São Paulo, in the early twentieth century. And to accomplish this, it will be used historical research (AROSTEGUI, 1995), document type (collection of documents of sports institutions), with a qualitative analysis and interpretation of data (GIL, 2007).
