Abstract

In Brazil, between 1974/75 and 2008/09 the prevalence of obesity among men increased by more than fourfold, from 2.8% to 12.4%, among women it duplicated, rising from 8.0% to 16.9%. The increase in obesity has covered all social classes, and several studies show that it has been greater among low-income population. Objective: To identify individual and environmental factors associated with overweight / obesity. Methods: It is a mixed study that uses primary individual information and environmental data. Data from "Population survey on food security and insecurity in Campinas SP: determinants, consequences for health and patterns of prevalence between 2003 and 2009", funded by FAPESP, with analysis of 536 adults aged 18 or older with complete data on household characteristics and health of individuals. Also, it will be collected data from the built environment, mainly local availability of healthy foods, besides the physical characteristics of the neighborhood. (AU)
