Urban expansion and sustainability: standards and indicators for implementation of the Statute of the City

Abstract

This research project aims to evaluate and discuss general aspects of environmental sustainability in processes of production and management of urban growth, as defined in the Statute of the City (Federal Law 10.257/2001), in order to propose criteria and indicators for analysis and planning. The research will study the city of Piracicaba, in the administrative region of Campinas, São Paulo state, an industrial city with 360 000 inhabitants and under great economic and urban dynamism. The evaluation of the sustainability will be based on the concept of sustainable urban form comprising both physical and non-physical aspects of the city such as: size, shape, density, land uses, building types, distribution of green areas, accessibility and socioeconomic diversity. The research will focus on four analysis axes: dynamics of urban expansion of Piracicaba in the period from 2000 to 2010; assessment instruments for urban management, urban planning standards and evaluation of environmental, development and application of indicators of sustainable urban form in the expansion areas urban and city as a whole, comparing the performance in 2000 and 2010. It is expected, with the result of the research, propose and review analysis tools applied to urban planning and as an aid to the implementation of the Statute of the City. (AU)
