Sign language interpreter: investigating aspects within pre school and elementary school

Abstract

Deaf education is a very actual and controversial theme. Deaf student after years of school participation does not present a satisfactory academic performance and, in general, main goals of basic education are not achieved. Recent studies show, as a main factor for this presented failure, the fact of special linguistic condition of deaf community is not respected. Scholar contents are administered in Portuguese that is frequently inaccessible for deaf community. Educational policies of School Inclusion option, places into Brazilian Education an additional problem, to educate deaf people in regular classes, taking in account their peculiarities. One of the strategies to attend these needs is to place an interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language with the student inside the classroom, trying to guarantee his or her linguistic access to the worked contents. This project has as its main goals: to interview interpreters involved with an inclusion proposal with these characteristics, within a municipal school of pre school education, and within a municipal elementary school, looking for a better understanding of this experiences; to discuss its relevancy on answering needs from deaf community; and to better understand specificities of this professional work within different levels of teaching.
