Identification of risk factors for the infestation of premises by Aedes aegypti and types of breeding containers which produce the major number of pupae in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo

Abstract

Infestation by Aedes aegypti does not occur homogenously within a determined area, and so it probably varies due to the characteristics of the breeding containers and premises. Objective: To identify risk factors involved in the infestation of premises by Aedes aegypti pupae and the types of breeding containers that produce the greatest number of pupae. Material and Methods: This study will be performed in the urban area of São José do Rio Preto, which was divided into 14 vector control regions to develop the activities of dengue surveillance and control by the Dengue Control Team of the Municipal Health and Hygiene Department. In a sample of 6600 premises selected in vector control areas with the greatest infestation levels, a measurement of the density of immature forms of the vector will be made in the months of January and February 2006 to obtain etymological indicators associated to the larvae and pupae. The larvae and pupae existing in each breeding container will be collected and identified. In all the premises involved, variables related to the constructions and their inhabitants and/or owners will be collected to identify, using logistic regression, the ones that should be considered a risk for the presence of pupae. The entomological larvae and pupa indicators will be statistically analyzed. The productivity of the pupae will be evaluated according to the type of breeding container and its environment (indoors and outdoors). The premises, in which the identified risk factors are present and the types of breeding containers with the greatest productivity of pupae will be considered key in the research. (AU)
