Abstract
Basic and applied research based on population studies contribute for the identification modifiable risks and, therefore, for developing efficient interventions. Treatments resulting in epilepsy interruption or regression have the potential to be employed as preventive measures. The main objective of this project is to foster a collaborative, research network, encompassing research teams of Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, with the purpose of investigating clinical, genetic-environmental and neurobiological interactions as factors of risk or protection in epileptogenesis, centered on the association between neuroinflammation and epilepsy of the temporal medial lobe. We aim to investigate neuroinflammatory processes, gene expression and central and peripherical immunological markers in epilepsy patients. Therefore, we will combine multimodal neuroimaging techniques (MRI, PET, CT) and molecular and cellular biology methods in order to identify the mechanisms involved in the physiopathology and the response to treatment in epilepsy. Besides that, we will evaluate if gene polymorphisms linked to relevant anti-epileptic drugs, and neuroinflammatory processes, are associated to pharmacological treatment resistance in epilepsy. (AU)
