The pathophysiology of congestive heart failure: from the organ to tile molecules

Abstract

The project aims at investigating the relevant aspects involved in the pathophysiology of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). Seven subprojects will be part of the CHF experimental model induced in rats after myocardial necrosis. As a whole, the project includes: three subprojects to investigate the effects of prolonged use of digitoxin after myocardial infarction. One of them will conduct functional, structural, and molecular biology myocardial evaluation at pre-defined time points after coronary occlusion; the two others will evaluate how prolonged use of digitalis affects sympathetic nervous activity in two cerebral nuclei; three subprojects will investigate the effect of physical exercise in post myocardial infarction. One of them will evaluate the effect of physical exercise on the survival of infracted rats; a second one will keep a follow-up on the successive biochemical, genic, structural, and functional changes promoted by exercise in infracted rats; and the third one will evaluate the effect of physical exercise on late reperfusion repercussions over the structure, function and biochemical composition of the heart submitted to coronary occlusion; a subproject will be conducted in continuation to a previous research project, where the action of hyperbaric oxygen was proven to be beneficial after myocardial infarction. The subproject will analyze the action of hyperbaric oxygen on the myocardial oxidative stress of infracted rats. (AU)
