Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the influence of Er:YAG laser energy for cavity preparation on ablation capacity, microhardness and morphology of superficial and deep dentin. Twenty-five crowns of sound human third molars will be sectioned in four fragments, providing 100 samples. Samples will be randomly assigned to 2 groups: superficial dentin (fragments will be grounded until 1mm under enamel-dentin junction ¡V EDJ) and deep dentin (2mm under EDJ). Each group will be divided into 5 subgroups (n=10) according the energy employed (150, 200, 250, 300 or 350mJ). Before and after ablation the specimens were height. After irradiation (3Hz, focused and non-contact mode, and respective energy), preparations will be sectioned in half, fixed in a matrix in such a way that the subsurface be faced up, and polished. The microhardness test will be performed in 6 depths (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120ƒÝm) at central region of the cavity. Distribution of data will be analyzed to employ the statistical method. For morphological analysis, five specimens of each group will be randomly selected and prepared for scanning electron microscopy. The most representative areas of each group will be photographed, at different magnifications, for posterior visual and qualitative evaluation. (AU)
