Abstract

Infection from HIV-1 in Brazil continues to grow at high rates. However, data on the incidence of infection in Brazil are extremely scarce. Using recent laboratorial methodology we are going to determine the incidence of HIV-1 and detect patients with recent infection ( 4 months) in the population that attends the COAS in Santos. In this way we will determine (a) the prevalence and the pattern of primary genotypic resistance to anti-retroviral drugs in the patients with recent infection (b) prevalence of the sub-types of HIV-1 in recent infections compared to non-recent infections and (c) genotype determination of epitopes of the region of HIV-1 potentially useful in the production of vaccines.
