Stars, the interstellar medium and their interrelationships

Abstract

The principal aim of this project is to study, through observation and modeling some of the components and interactions of the stars and the lnsterstellar Medium (IS:M) of the Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds (MC). We wi11: (a) probe the envelopes and the mass loss processes in massive stars; (b) study asymmetries around the luminous red giants and supergiants; (c) develop tools to be used to study envelopes around stars in general; (d) probe the ISM itself and its magnetic field; (e) study the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and the MC. Among the tools used, and in addition to photometric and spectroscopic techniques, we will employ accurate imaging polarimeters and spectropolarimeters, both either already built by us or being designed and implemented. We thus request financial support for these activities in the form of the acquisition of basic computational means and support for the development of instrumentation. Finally, and in addition to use polarimetry to study the ISM in the MC, a few programs that explore the polarimetric technique to study the physics and geometry of Active Galactic Nuclei are also described.
