Abstract

The project's objective is to carry out a critical appraisal of knowledge building, after 1980, with regards to youth issues and their connection to schooling. In emphasizing working class segments in Brazilian society, the survey intends to establish an analytical picture of the principal theoretical guidelines present in the studies, identifying emerging themes that have not as yet been examined by educational research so as to promote new investigations. It also intends to register, systematize and analyze new forms of contemporary youth sociability, principally those that surpass the limits of socializing institutions such as the family and the working world and those that appear as spontaneous groups. Public and non governmental schooling alternatives proposed for youth and adults will also be an object of investigation within the scope of the principal initiatives over the last ten years. The project will construct an extensive data base including: 1. Data bank about building knowledge including theses, dissertations, published articles and books; 2. Data bank about youngsters and their various forms of collective action, behavior, values and life styles by systematically following up the Brazilian press. This survey also includes the recording of the main experiences, be it in schooling or not, of attending the young population or of their own initiative; 3. Data bank containing a roster of researchers, institutions and groups related to the subject, both in the academic field and in that of direct intervention, being responsible for schooling or other experiences (cultural, professional, sport) with the young.
