Participation of ST2 receptor in inflammatory response and bone resorption in periapical lesion formation

Abstract

Osteoimmunology is an emerging field of research dedicated to study the relationship between the skeletal and immune system. It has been shown that diverse mediators released during an inflammatory process can also modulate development and function of osteoclasts and osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for the bone degradation and formation. The balance between formation and activation of these cells is critic for the osteolitic diseases compreention. Pulp exposition and bacteria can trigger the production of cytokines, which can start bone and tooth resorption. The literature has described new cytokine and, their role in inflammatory response has also been very studied and described. One cytokine member of IL-1 family, named IL-33, has a role in osteoclastogenesis. In vitro experiments have shown that IL-33 can inhibit osteoclasts differentiation and its mechanism. The role of IL-33 in the periapical lesion development and consequent bone metabolism has not been addressed yet. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate, how IL-33 participates in the inflammatory process during the periapical lesion formation and if IL-33 modulates the bone metabolism in vivo. The findings of the present study will give rise to a better understanding of the mechanisms of IL-33 underlying osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption during periapical lesion, as well as provide knowledge that can help the development of alternative therapeutic target for its treatment.
