Planning for sustainable cities: modeling and technologies

Abstract

Cities and their buildings have been designed without a plan that guarantees the sustainability in terms of energy and environmental elements, and when cities are conceived considering concepts of urban planning, it is not always taken into account throughout its historical evolution. This results in dependency on external forms of energy supply to the city, while worsening their environmental problems with waste disposal, water supply, distribution, transportation routes, among others. Similarly, the building, that is the urban structure core of cities and roads, lacks attention from the point of view of sustainable planning. Only recently the evaluation of needed conditions for the buildings individual energy supply can pose environmental and perhaps economic gains. Several research have been proposed for the sustainability of cities: in technological terms, cogeneration systems applied to residences and condominiums, and cooling system generated by absorption thermo would be examples; in terms of public policy, it could be mentioned the compulsory installation of solar heating systems in public buildings in several cities, such as recently occurred in the city of São Paulo. This project aims to analyze the energy and environmental aspects of city planning in order to be sustainable; the proposed approach involves the study of the technologies that have been suggested for the aggregation of sustainable solutions problems to rural and urban cores of cities, as well as the study of the models proposed in the literature for the decision about the incorporation or not of such technologies to cities.
