Alcohol use: evolution of patterns over eight years and harm to others (passive drinkers)

Abstract

Most population surveys on alcohol consumption investigates the issues in relation to the drinker, but few studies have evaluated substantial damage caused to others by drinking. The damage to others can occur in different ways and levels of severity to persons in different relations of the drinker. The damages include, among others, intentional or not injury (assaults, homicides, traffic and work accidents); neglect or violence (against children, spouse / partner, unknown); and toxic effects (fetal alcohol syndrome). Objective: The aim of this study is to develop a database on the negative impacts of alcohol consumption on the others. Method: Cross-sectional study in stratified and representative sample in the metropolitan area of São Paulo, comprising about 1200 individuals over 18 years old. Data collection will be done with the Questionnaire "Genacis - Harm to Others" in interviews in selected households. The results will be compared by usual proportions, through binomial distribution or normal approximation, as an alpha value of 5% will be set for the occurrence of error of the first kind. Outcome: Specific information about the circumstances and contingencies of harm to others caused by alcohol consumption may contribute to the formation of policy responses and effective in preventing or reducing damage.
