Abstract

International studies show that excessive alcohol intake and other drug use in nightclubs and bars are associated with more episodes of psychical aggression, sexual violence and traffic accidents. A pattern of alcohol consumption, particularly risky, that has aroused international interest and has recently been investigated in Brazil is known as binge drinking or heavy episodic drinking and apparently is associated with the young population and the frequency to "baladas" (nightclubs and bars). In several countries, creating a safe environment for nightlife has become synonymous of reducing excessive alcohol use, indirectly reducing rates of violence, accidents and other health problems that affect not only the individual, but society as a whole. Diagnosis of what is happening in the nightlife of São Paulo city is the first step for the development of preventive actions targeting the exposed population. The central aim of this project is the description of factors associated to different patterns of alcohol and other drugs use in the "baladas" of the city of São Paulo, with in depth focus on binge drinking. Thus, we propose a study to assess the reality of nightclubs and bars, which will generate an intervention program to be implemented to these establishments' owners and managers and a web intervention for young people with harmful alcohol use. Portal survey techniques will be used to quantify patrons' alcohol and other drugs use at the entrance and exit of the establishments, besides violence and risk behaviors. Ethnographic data about environmental factors of the nightclub and data from semi-structured interviews among patrons allow thorough understanding of the phenomenon. (AU)
