Abstract

Domestic ceramic ware intended for contact with foodstuffs, for example pottery and porcelain, coated and/or decorated with glass enamel can lead to migration of chemical elements, especially lead and cadmium. The amount of these elements can migrate into the food depends on the quality of the ceramic ware and the temperature of glaze fire, the use condition, i.e. time and temperature in contact with the foodstuffs, and type and nature of the acid into the foodstuffs and levels these elements in the ceramic ware. Imported ceramic ware has been greatly commercialized in Brazil in last few years, with suspicion about their quality, particularly about to the lead content in the glaze material. ANVISA - National Health Surveillance Agency - regulates the imported or national ceramic ware in Brazil by the Resolution nº27/96 and establishes the limits for overall migration and specific migration of lead and cadmium. Therefore, the objective of this study is to ascertain the quality of national and imported domestic ceramic ware, as prescribed in the Resolution nº 27/96. (AU)
