Abstract

Periodontal disease is present in at least one tooth in 80% of the adult population of the world is a chronic oral infection that exposes the host to bacterial antigens and virulence factors, manifesting itself in two forms: gingivitis and chronic periodontitis and can cause to tooth loss.  Periodontal disease, is also associated to clinical complications, such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes mellitus, respiratory infections, osteoporosis and premature births newborn with low birth weight.More specifically in relation to pregnancy, there are several complications, and are associated with hormonal, immunological, dietary and comportamenta, may cause oral health problems, mainly including periodontal tissues.The periodontal problems cause discomfort to pregnant women, as well as endanger the pregnancy. The literature shows that pregnant women with periodontal pockets of infection are more likely to have newborn low birth weight, preterm delivery, preeclampsia and early abortion; addition there is evidence of the association between periodontal disease and increased risk of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, and diabetes mellitus.Therefore there is a need for call centers pregnant women, have a protocol for dental care well defined, creating a breakthrough in prenatal care and in public health policy.
