Morphological and histological analysis of the glans penis and of baculum of species of molossids and vespertilionids bats: taxonomic implications (Chiroptera, Mammalia)

Abstract

The Molossidae and Vespertilionidae families of bats are among the largest in number of species, and has distribution in tropical and temperate zones of the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and despite this, detailed information about the different taxa of these families are still scarce, which makes interpretations and evolutionary formulations of relationships among taxa incongruent. Most proposed phylogenies based on characters from external morphology and cranial and more recently, molecular are still inconsistent. The objective of this project is therefore to assess aspects of morphological variation with emphasis on the penis glans and the baculum, characterizing them histologically and morphologically, increasing the information about these structures in nine taxa of molossids (Eumops auripendulus, E. glaucinus E. perotis, Cynomops abrasus, C. planirostris, molossus, M. rufus, and Neoplatymops matogrossensis Molossops temminckii), six vespertilionids (Eptesicus brasiliensis, E. diminutus, E. furinalis, Lasiurus cinereus, L. blossevilli and Myotis nigricans ) and one emballonurid (Peropteryx macrotis). It is expected that the results will facilitate the formulation of phylogenetic relationships among them, since these features are diagnostic characters (taxonomic) material that can be used in the taxonomy and evolutionary interpretations.
