Abstract

Professor Luis Díaz-Balteiro comes to Brazil for two months, to participate in two projects that have already. In part, these initiatives already rely on the financial support of a mobility project funded by the European Community, of which both professors Díaz-Balteiro as the requester of this aid are coordinators in their respective countries. This project is entitled ForEAdapt - Knowledge exchange between Europe and America on forest growth models and optimization for adaptive forestry (FP7-PEOPLE-2009-IRSES), and is financed with funds from the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (COST Action) for a period of 48 months, which had started in Feb/11. The work will be developed in a partnership with Professors Luiz Carlos Estraviz Rodriguez and Edson Vidal, and the postgraduate student Klauberg Carine, whom funded by ForEAdapt has already worked with Prof. Diaz-Balteiro at the Polytechnic University of Madrid for a short period of time. Specifically, the goal is to write an article for submission to the journal Forest Ecology and Management. We seek to estimate the optimal rotation for the extraction of copaiba oil, a non timber product of great importance for extractive communal reserves in the Brazilian Amazon. We will also discuss and develop management models that integrate the production of non-timber forest products of socio-economic importance to communities sheltered by the State Park of Serra do Mar, which depend on the remaining biodiversity still preserved in important fragments of the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo. Initially, the focus will be the juçara palm (Euterpe edulis), but further research will seek to map other potential products and activities of equal importance. (AU)
