Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different Er: YAG laser (Super Short Pulse-SSP) parameters in sound and artificial caries-affected dentine. The flattened occlusal dentin of 275 human unerupted molars will be protected with acid resistant varnish in half of the occlusal surface (sound dentin - control) and on the other half caries affected dentine will be produced by microbiological challenge for 7 days. Thereafter different Er:YAG laser (SSP) surface conditioning parameters (Lightwalker AT, Fotona, Slovenija) will be applied (G1 - no conditioning; G2 - 80mJ, 2Hz, 50µs; G3 - 70mJ, 2Hz, 50µs; G4 - 60mJ, 2Hz, 50µs; G5 - 50mJ, 2Hz, 50µs). Distinct analysis will be accomplished through: Surface Microscopy (SEM) (n = 5), morphological evaluation of the bonding interface by SEM (n = 5), transmission electron microscopy (n = 5), ultramicrohardness test (n = 10) and microshear test (n = 20). A longitudinal analysis will be performed for all assays after 6 months storage, and these data will be compared with those obtained within 24 hours. The specimens will be assembled using a self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray, Japan) associated to a composite resin (Z350 XT, 3M ESPE, USA). We intend to determine a conditioning parameter with Er:YAG (SSP) laser in sound and caries affected dentine in order to improve adhesion and its durability. The quantitative data will be statistically analyzed (Q<0.05) and the qualitative comparison will be described in relation to control tissue. (AU)
