Abstract

This project's main objective is to calculate the irradiance and radiant exposure (sometimes referred to as dose) to the ultraviolet spectrum of solar radiation, aimed at ensuring eye protection by sunglasses. The motivation for these calculations is that the Brazilian standard NBR15111:2004 standardizes tests of sunglasses and the quality of their UV filters. For the latter, the rule states that one must radiate sunglasses for 25 continuous hours, using a solar simulator. The main drawback of this test is that, being derived from European and Australian standards, there is no evidence that these 25 hours of simulated exposure to sunglasses are appropriate or correct to Brazil. Thus, there is no known correlation between the exposure time on the simulator and the time of exposure to the sun. Thus, the test of durability of UV lenses' protection, which aims to determine at what point there is a significant filter deterioration, is compromised. It is important to accurately determine this correlation as there may be variations for different localities, especially in Brazil, for its continental extension. The calculations proposed for all Brazilian cities with over 50,000 inhabitants (576 locations) will support the review committee of NBR15111:2004 for its improvement. The results have potential impact on industry and market sunglasses in order to increase the control, supervision and quality of marketed products for the security and protection of the eye health of the population.
