Abstract

From the analysis of 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios, presented on the tooth enamel of individuals buried at the Armação do Sul shell midden site, in association with a stratigraphically oriented chronology based upon the skeletal distribution and the analysis of 13C/12C and 15N/14N, we intend to scale - in eventual, conjunctural and structural terms - the meanings and implications of the discontinuity which occurs in the stratigraphy of the site and in the mortuary practices crystalized in it. Understanding the Armação do Sul site as a key element towards the comprehension of the occupation process at Santa Catarina's central shore, we shall try to "extrapolate" the obtained results to the regional archeological reality, under a long duration perspective which inserts the Armação do Sul site in the larger context of the central shore shell midden sites, contributing to a greater understanding of the peculiar archeological panorama nowadays known to Santa Catarina's central shore.
