Abstract

This project will examine the circulation of books by French naturalists, their reception in journals and magazines published in Brazil and abroad, and read by a Brazilian audience. It also aims to critically compare the literary Amazonian fiction of the Brazilian Herculano Inglês de Souza (1852-1918) to the written accounts by a group of French travelers who visited the Brazilian Amazon between 1860 and 1910. In addition, this project will examine the critical reaction Brazilians had to the different representations of Amazonia in these books and will simultaneously study critical reviews of French travelers' works and of Inglês de Souza's fiction. Efforts will be made to search for unpublished work by Inglês de Sousa at the National Library of Rio de Janeiro and in the archives of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. (AU)
