Abstract

Brazilian government has been encouraging fish farming in cages in hydroelectric reservoirs by demarcation of aquaculture parks. Because of it, the aim of this project is to develop a production model of Nile tilapias in cages more efficient and profitable to the small farmers, sustainable, environmentally secure and which ensure the public health. An experiment in completely randomized design, factorial 3 x 2 with 3 replicates, will be carried out at a commercial fish farm located in Nova Avanhandava Reservoir, Tietê River. Three stocking densities will be tested: D1 - 80, D2 - 60 e D3 - 40 kg/m3 associated to two feed managements: A1 - daily portion of diet in according with recommendation of the feed manufacturer (daily percentage of biomass) offered twice a day; A2 - 70% of recommended daily portion of diet offered once a day. Each experimental unit will be a cage (6 m3) where will be inserted substrates to produce periphyton. The trial will start with Nile tilapias, Oreochromis niloticus, weighing 80 g and will finish when their average weight reaches 800 g. Parameters of growth performance, accumulated mortality, health, stomach content (food items), water quality inside the cages, production cost and sustainability of the system will be evaluated. Results will be presented in scientific meetings and in courses for the fish farmers; and published in scientific journals and technical texts for the productive sector. (AU)
