Abstract

Among the Siluriformes, Loricariidae family is widely distributed with approximately 860 species, of which the tribe Ancistrini is the largest in number of species, having 217 valid species, distributed in 29 genera. The genus Ancistrus, is one of the most diversified tribe and now has 74 nominal species, but still rather dubious taxonomy and many unidentified species. Systematic and phylogenetic studies based on osteological and molecular characters indicate that the genus is a monophyletic unit between their species, but due to the large number of descriptions and redescriptions, the relationships between species are still uncertain. The few chromosomal data in the literature for species of Ancistrus show high variation in diploid number ranging from 2n = 34 to 2n = 54 and the presence of simple and multiple sex chromosome systems, beyond the description of a XX/XO system. The absence of chromosomal and molecular analyzes in this genus representatives in the different basins and the need to provide new tools to aid the understanding of the taxonomy and biodiversity of Loricariidae justify this work, which aims addition to an extensive study of phylogeny also identify molecular cytogenetic markers present in the genome of the Ancistrus species in order to provide data that can contribute to the clarification of the confusing taxonomy of the group, contributing to the understanding of karyotype evolution and evolutionary history of the group as well as provide more information on characteristics and evolution of sex chromosomes in fish.
