Abstract

Umbilical disorders are featured among the diseases affecting calves in the first month of life, because they have high incidence in this period and cause significant economic losses. Also, the diagnosis is often complicated by the difficulty in detecting the extent of the navel affected structures, particularly the internal ones, which negatively affects the choice of the most appropriate treatment and the establishment of a prognosis for each animal affected. Given these difficulties, it is proposed in this study of umbilical diseases in calves up to 30 days after birth, to use different methods of exam, such as ultrasound and thermography, comparing their results with the findings of a physical examination of the region and determining the limitations and advantages of each semiological method used. Still, this study aims to validate criteria for defining the severity of the disease with data obtained through these complementary diagnostic resources, and from immunological status of calves during the first 30 days of life. The results of this trial will enable the establishment of a possible correlation between failure of transfer of passive immunity, immunological response, and the presence, evolution, and severity of infectious omphalitis.
